Our experience

Established in 1985, Hi-Fi City has grown from a successful retail outlet on Watford High Street into a specialist contractor delivering technically demanding installations across North London and the Home Counties. As technologies changed and custom installations grew in demand, we adapted, and we’ve been ahead of the curve ever since.

Hi-Fi City has a highly skilled team of in-house installers who make sure every job is completed to the highest standard. Our experience and passion for all things audio visual is second to none. We build personal relationships with our clients and we’re regularly recommended by existing customers who trust our integrity and work ethic.

Our story

From Watford High Street to smart home specialists.

Hi-Fi City originated as a successful retail outlet on Watford High Street, where customers were served for many years. We built a loyal following among audiophiles and home cinema enthusiasts who valued genuine expertise over a sales pitch.

As technologies changed and custom installations became more in demand, driven by the rapid progression of AV equipment we adapted our business model. We moved away from retail and became focused entirely on supplying and installing for residential and business customers alike.

Today we design, supply and install complete smart home, home cinema, multi-room audio and lighting systems. We work with homeowners, interior designers, architects and commercial clients and we’ve been doing it from our base in St Albans since 1985.

1985

Founded in St Albans

Opened as a specialist hi-fi audio retailer, building a loyal following among audiophiles across Hertfordshire.

1990

Custom installation begins

As home cinema grew in popularity we became one of the first in the region to offer professional installation services.

2004

Multi-room audio

Became an early Sonos authorised dealer, installing whole-home audio systems across Hertfordshire and North London.

2012

CEDIA membership

Joined CEDIA, the industry’s leading professional body for residential technology installers.

2018

Full home smart systems

Expanded into complete smart home integration — lighting, networking, security and AV under one roof.
